Description

Red crowned parakeet, also known as Kakariki (in maori), is one of the most common species of parakeets that can be found in New Zealand. His maori name, Kakariki, stands for "small parrot". This particular one I met in Ulva Island conservation area located on the very south of New Zealand in Stewart Island area. On this small area local Department of Conservation created a safe, predator free, haven for local endangered bird species to help raise their numbers. Birds there are completely fearless and once you start walking around you can see and hear them everywhere. This fella came to check on me just few minutes after I left the boat, landed in front of me, sung a short song and then, as quickly as he appeared, he was gone.
